R.I.P. Tumblr – All adult content to be banned this week

The porn purge has now begun, and Tumblr will probably die as a result of its own foolishness. Considering how many people use the site purely for adult content, this is kind of amazing to behold.

Expect to see this a lot:

Tumblr will permanently ban adult content from its platform on December 17th in a move that will eradicate porn-related communities on the platform and fundamentally alter how the service is used.

The ban includes explicit sexual content and nudity with a few exceptions, the company tells The Verge. The new policy’s announcement comes just days after Tumblr was removed from Apple’s iOS App Store over a child pornography incident, but it extends far beyond that matter alone. “Adult content will no longer be allowed here,” the company flatly states in a blog post set to be published on Monday.

Posts with porn content will be set to private, which will prevent them from being reblogged or shared elsewhere in the Tumblr community.

Weirdly enough the ban reminded me to start using tumblr again….I haven’t really used it in years, and even now my presence is limited.

A lot of the people I followed have gone inactive over the years so it’s kind of boring now :sad

Nah you’re not old, it’s just a mess of a website. I only used it for yaoi and stuff lol. Never actually posted there myself.

Hard to say for sure. There’s definitely a mass exodus due to this ban though. And I keep hearing about various fandoms moving to other sites, but I’m not sure which ones. Where would they even go? Twitter?

Why was Tumblr popular anyway? That’s what I don’t understand. What did the platform offer than made it useful? Twitter has only a few ways to organize things that are generally more trouble than it’s worth, imo.

The big appeal for me was it had a lot of people of various fandoms and it was a cool way to discuss & share content related to those. I joined way back when the last harry potter movies were coming out and it filled a gap for me after I left NF. It was a cool place to post fanfics, fanart, edits (gifs, screenshots, etc.) and the community was /generally/ positive which I always liked.

Basically it was a great way to waste time while exploring fandoms that I liked and it always had super up to date news in regards to upcoming shows and movies and such.

Nowadays there are far less people though (and that’s not just because of the ban…people were leaving before that) but I will browse occasionally :surprised
